Icelandic Sheep "The only gift is a portion of thyself...the poet brings his poem; the shepherd his lamb." Ralph Waldo Emerson

After doing a thorough study on the different breeds of sheep, we made a firm decision to go with Icelandic sheep. Icelandics are one of the purest and oldest (over 1000 years old) breeds of sheep in the world today. They are also known as a triple purpose breed for their contribution to top quality meat, milk and fiber. Their gourmet meat is mildly flavored, tender and lean. Their milk has been used to make gourmet artisan cheeses. Their fleece comes in many colors and is a favorite for spinning and felting.

Since they were developed in Iceland which is not a grain-producing country, they were bred exclusively for the pasture and they thrive on it. Their genetics are geared specifically for the pasture. They are cold-hardy (a bonus in the land up north!) and produce excellent mothers and vigorous lambs. The meat lambs are ready for processing off the pasture in 4-6 months when they reach their ideal weight of 70-100 pounds.

Hands-down, Icelandics won our attention and favor which is why we are pleased to have them grazing on our pastures to offer to our customers.
