The Mesko Family

Good Farmer John has a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy, and a Master of Science degree in Farm Management from Purdue University. He is a former county extension agent and seed industry agronomist with over 20 years of experience in advising farmers. He is now transitioning to full-time farming on his boyhood farm, a long-awaited-for dream.

John has consulted with farmers in the US and in Russia regarding sustainable agriculture practices. His expertise in farming and teaching others to farm is at the core of Lighthouse Farm.

You too, can grow your own food. Lighthouse Farm workshops are a great place to learn about the basic and advanced skills regarding homesteading, food production, preservation and even cooking. In addition to all this, they are a great place to meet other like-minded folks who are in the same place.
  • Our vision is to provide food for ourselves and our community that is healthy, local and of the highest quality.
  • Across the country, farms are being sold to development due to the fact that the next generation is leaving the farm. As one old-time farmer put it, "Our family didn't mind the hard work. We just didn't get paid enough for it and had to fold." To be truly sustainable, we are committed to ensure that our farm is economically viable in order to attract the next generation to continue providing food for our community for many generations to come.
  • Beyond that, we see a desperate need for teaching others to produce food on their properties.
Be sure to sign up for our e-newsletter and get the latest updates on the farm, meat deliveries, workshops and more! (We guarentee that we will keep your e-mail address confidential.)

The Farm

The Farm we have purchased has been in the Mesko Family since 1961.

Our historic farm was homesteaded in the late 1800's and is one of the last remaining in our township.

With over 100 acres of pasture, we not only understand but are able to meet the needs and requirements for authentic, grass-based meat production. Our pasture and stored grasses for the winter (hay) consist of timothy, bromegrass, orchard grass, quack grass, clover and small amounts of various forbs.
